THE DRIVING FORCE IN OUR WORLD
[attr="class","appcon"]What is Mana?
Mana is the ‘energy’ that fuels your characters’ powers. When your characters start to get low on mana their power begins to weaken and become less effective.
[attr="class","appcon"]Where does it come from?
All types of mana come from the Realms. The Realms are other planes of existence where mana is rich and infused with the land itself. It used to be that Realms could only be reached by using portals or with a select few gifts. However the realms are now part of the human world, which means that all the danger which was once contained inside them has been unleashed upon the earth.
Mana presents itself as the environment and all the living creatures which inhabit the lands. Each Realm has a different kind of mana although they all have essentially the same properties, only with different implications for how it presents physically or as a power.
However, mana doesn’t just stay in its designated Realm, especially now that all the Realms are on the same plane. Mana from all Realms now mingles on the earth, although there are areas where certain kinds of mana are more or less abundant. Mana is used by all the realm creatures on earth and is also used by the gifted humans who need it to fuel their powers.
Earth is in a very special dimension because it doesn’t have any natural form of mana and doesn’t need it to survive. This is the main reason that when the Realms all merged together Earth was the base dimension upon which the merge occurred. It can support all types of mana and now that realm creatures and habitats exist on Earth, it can create all types of mana as well.
[attr="class","appcon"]What is an ubeity?
Mana wasn’t the only thing that could escape through the overlaps in the dimensions and into the human world, ubeities also came through as well. An ubeity is a being of mana. That’s right, they are made completely of mana and are dependent on mana. When they are still in their corporeal form, they are simply realm creatures who need mana to survive. However when they die in their physical form, creatures which are strong enough can live a second life in a human who can absorb and use mana. They give their powers to the human and are allowed to live for as long as the human does.
While mana is the energy that feeds your character’s power, the ubiety is the source. Humans can't do much at all with mana on their own, but when their body is inhabited by an ubiety they can become empowered with supernatural gifts.
Now this isn’t a possession in most cases. The person who has an ubeity is still their self, they just have powers. Most people don’t ever meet their ubeity or hear from them, but some people hear them almost like a voice in their head or like an instinct to do something they wouldn’t normally do. There are even those who voluntarily give control over to their ubiety. Each case is different, but people almost never lose control of their own body to an ubeity.
[attr="class","appcon"]What does it mean for my character?
Humans absorb mana at a trickle rate, meaning that they don’t have an infinite supply of it. If your character overuses their power or their power comes in a quick burst, they are likely to run out of mana quickly. When a gifted person begins to run out of mana, their power weakens. If they continue using it and run out of mana entirely, their power stops working altogether. They need rest and time to absorb more mana.
Some people are stronger than others though, because they can use mana more efficiently and with less drain. As gifted humans get older and have their ubeity for longer, they gain more control over their power and over how much mana they consume, allowing them to be more powerful and use their mana up at a slower rate. This can also be done through extensive training from a professional in that area, but its very difficult.
